Starship Design

Entering and leaving the ship

Small ships may have hatches for docking, while larger ships rely primarily on their translocator systems or shuttle craft.

Ship systems

Translocator system

The translocator works by converting matter into an energy stream and back. Strict controls exist to ensure that none of the translocated matter is lost and all is reassembled properly at the destination.

To translocate an object, the system must first obtain a 'lock' on the object. Distance, atmosphere and other conditions may affect the system's ability to obtain a lock. Generally speaking, translocating from one translocator pad to another provides the best lock. Comm devices can also provide good locks.

The beam command is used to operate the translocator. If no parameters are passed to beam, the translocator will translocate all objects in the target area that it can obtain a lock on. If passed parameters, beam will translocate all objects in the target area that match each word passed. For example, if QBFreak, Phealy and Shootme were in the target area, beam qb ph sm would attempt to translocate them. To beam objects when multiple words are needed to distinguish them (such as container 2), enclose the multiple words in curly brackets: beam qb {container 2}.

The beam command uses the default translocator destination, usually the room the translocator console is located in. Other locations can be programmed into the system and referenced with the beam command. For example, if the location sickbay is programmed into the system, beam qb=sickbay would send QBFreak to Sickbay.

Comm badges and other unique (forged) items may be added to the translocator database and used to obtain a lock on the objects carrying them.

Future designs may be limited by distance, however without actual space to test in this is not currently feasable.

Comms

The comm system is the main system used for person to person and ship to ship communication. At a lower level it also handles all communications within and between ship systems. The synaptic core provides a network of secure channels for inter-device communication, the higher level comm system uses this as an underlying protocol for inter-personal communication.

IDEA! It is important to note that the channels provided by the synaptic core and the channels provided by the comms are two different types of channels, existing at two different protocol layers.

Comm badges provide a mobile access point to this communication network that each crew member can carry with them. To contact someone through the comms the crew member would tap their badge. This opens a private channel between the two badges that can be used by all parties in both the source and destination rooms. Both both comms devices (badges, consoles, etc) relay all communication to the newly create comms channel, both devices also relay the comms channel back to the room. Each comms device can have either a close channel command and a list of trigger phrases to close channels. Common phrases such as QBFreak out can be used to close the channel.
